There was the time before Tessa met Hardin, and then there’s everything AFTER... Life will never be the same. #Hessa

Tessa is a good girl with a sweet, reliable boyfriend back home. She’s got direction, ambition, and a mother who’s intent on keeping her that way.

But she’s barely moved into her freshman dorm when she runs into Hardin. With his tousled brown hair, cocky British accent, tattoos, and lip ring, Hardin is cute and different from what she’s used to.

But he’s also rude—to the point of cruelty, even. For all his attitude, Tessa should hate Hardin. And she does—until she finds herself alone with him in his room. Something about his dark mood grabs her, and when they kiss it ignites within her a passion she’s never known before.

He’ll call her beautiful, then insist he isn’t the one for her and disappear again and again. Despite the reckless way he treats her, Tessa is compelled to dig deeper and find the real Hardin beneath all his lies. He pushes her away again and again, yet every time she pushes back, he only pulls her in deeper.

Tessa already has the perfect boyfriend. So why is she trying so hard to overcome her own hurt pride and Hardin’s prejudice about nice girls like her?

Unless…could this be love?

I strongly encourage anyone who enjoys a good story about many of the most relatable situations many of us have gone through in our college or adult lives. For anyone saying this relationship played out in After is toxic or abusive - you clearly did not learn how to critical think or even simply absorb and digest context of literature. Even the most angry of characters (which to be real, a lot of them go through growing pains that come with life & evolve as we IRL humans have too) are not angry or destructive in the physical to harm but emotionally more so to themselves which is incredibly relatable to all of us in some way. This novel, and series even, has so many themes and stories within itself that a lot of readers can identify with. Not once did I note a toxic relationship, in fact, I was happily surprised that a book so full of “love/romance/coming of age encounters” had many of the same situations, “situationships”, friend/family scenarios, and even characters I or friends have experienced and/or know. It was as if, someone was finally writing about real life things that happen. Ask anyone on college or university, they had the same experiences at some point in all capacities. Ask any twenty something hell, even thirty something that still has that one person they cannot resist. We have all been there, and Anna just has the magic in her story telling to create something we all want to continue to read, be a part of, and feel like “okay I am not the only one”. Give AFTER a chance. It’s not all sex and teenagers fighting. It’s so much more emotional and deeper than the cliché one page magazine articles that summarize it as “one direction story” or “fifty shades for teens”. This story definitely evolved from the first iteration that was One D aimed. This is beyond that now. So give it a read, and don’t be surprised if you fall in love with the entire series.

id give it zero stars if i could. it romanticizes abusive relationships and has a horrible plot line. i genuinely hope young kids don’t read this and think these kinds of relationships are healthy

There are a lot of negative comments about the book but I was sucked in. The drama, love, and figuring out the relationship is so intriguing. I loved this book and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

It pisses me off how people are saying this book is “promoting abuse” IT’S NOT! It’s about how two young people are lost and just don’t know much about relationships YOU HAVE TO READ the rest of the series to actually understand the whole plot! I can’t argue about it not being an abusive relationship because quite honestly it is but THAT IS LIFE SOMETIMES NOT EVERYTHING IS SO BLACK AND WHITE if you get to the last book you see how much different their relationship is and not only that but in ALL books you SEE character development isn’t that the BEST thing a book could have.. books are for entertainment and sometimes even a life lesson you overly sensitive people can call it “terrible” but at the end of the day it got published and a movie is being made.. The author even said she didn’t mean for it too be that intense but she was writing for fun at first for God sake she can’t change that because it is already out there at least she’s making the movie less intense and that should mean something!

This series made me love reading. It shows that even when nothing goes right there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel and for Hardin that light was Tessa. It’s not an abuse story but simply about a guy allowing himself to be loved.

It’s exactly what I’ve been needing to read. It’s fast paced and never bores you, not even once. This is now my favorite book OF ALL TIME. It’s all those romantic movies piled into one super book and it’s fantastic.
